Portfolio - Chelsea Garden by Judith Sharpe
The Shloer Garden was designed for the 2001 Chelsea Flower Show. The inspiration came from the Swiss Family Robinson-style 'tree' house. Although the 'tree' house could suggest an exotic location, our garden was very much an English one and designed to evoke the kind of gardens found in the Gulf Stream
With global warming becoming a reality, we are now able to experiment with a far wider and less hardy range of plants than ever before. Here, architectural plants are not used in isolation but have been mixed with exotic-looking herbaceous and ground cover plants to a dramatic effect.
We had the least sponsorship of all the large show gardens/'gardens in the open' exhibitors and achieved a bronze medal and critical acclaim from Christopher Lloyd, Beth Chatto and Roy Lancaster. This followed a silver medal for 'Gone for a Break - a tribute to Dick Allen' sponsored by the Horticultural Trades Association at the 1998 Chelsea Flower Show
